Whilst studying, Tessa worked for British Rail Regional Architects Department at Euston and was involved in the refurbishment of St Pancras, Stoke-on-Trent and Liverpool Lime Street stations. On qualifying, she worked for Burns Guthrie and Partners from 1985-1989, being appointed Associate in 1988.

In 1989 she became an Associate with Merrick Curtis Associates in Tonbridge. Following a year's contract as Senior Architect with Unilever Engineering, she worked from home from 1993 to 2003 whilst bringing up her two sons. She now has returned to Burns Guthrie and Partners and is involved with large school projects and with private clients. She has a particular interest inlisted and vernacular buildings.
